Anniversary for a pioneer: BARD Offshore 1, Germany’s most productive offshore wind farm, has been in operation for five years
Almost 6 terawatt hours fed into the grid in five years. Continuous increase in production during day-to-day opera-tions to a production record of 1.5 TWh in 2017
Five years ago, on 26 August 2013, the first commercial German offshore wind farm BARD Offshore 1 went into operation. Since then, BARD Offshore 1 has fed almost 6 terawatt hours (TWh) into the grid. In 2013 and 2014, BARD Offshore 1's electricity production was still just under half a TWh, and from 2015 significantly above one TWh. The first German offshore wind farm has thus continuously increased its production output and in 2017 was Germany's offshore wind farm with the highest output, with an energy yield of around 1.5 TWh (1.488).
Jens Hagen, Commercial Managing Director at Ocean Breeze Energy (OBE), says: “As pioneers of the German offshore industry, we had to face many challenges on the high seas first. Today, five years after the start of operations, BARD Offshore 1 is Germany's offshore wind farm with the highest production capacity. We have achieved this in particular with the continuous optimization of offshore processes by our best-in-class team.”
Jean Huby, Technical Managing Director at OBE, adds: “The pioneering project BARD Offshore 1 has paved the not always easy way for the offshore wind industry in Germany. The journey is not over yet: with the experience we have gained at Ocean Breeze Energy together with our industry partners, we have a lot of potential for further optimizations. We are pleased to be able to make a contribution to a successful Energiewende.”
As one of the world's largest commercial offshore wind farms, BARD Offshore 1 achieves a rated output of up to 400 megawatts (MW) with its 80 wind turbines in the 5 MW class.

Über BARD Offshore 1
BARD Offshore 1 is the first commercial offshore wind farm in Germany. 80 wind energy generators of the 5 megawatt class reach a nominal capacity of 400 mega-watt. The offshore wind farm is located approx. 100 km north of the isle of Borkum in the German North Sea and comprises an area of approx. 59 square kilometres with water depths of approx. 39 to 41 metres.
Ocean Breeze Energy GmbH & Co. KG is the owner and operator of the BARD Off-shore 1 wind farm, which is indirectly held 100% by HypoVereinsbank.
