BARD Offshore 1: Germany’s most productive offshore wind farm in 2017
Total wind energy output in 2017 reached 1.5 terawatt hours representing the demand of 430,000 average households.
This represents an increase of 13% year-on-year.
With a total energy production of around 1.5 TWh (1.488 TWh), representing an increase of 13 percent year-on-year, BARD Offshore 1 was Germany's most productive offshore wind farm in 2017. The North Sea wind farm was responsible for 8 percent of the total output of all German offshore wind farms in 2017 (18.3 TWh).
“In general, offshore wind is an enormous and essential contribution to the energy turnaround”, commented Jens Hagen, Managing Director of Ocean Breeze Energy. “Our wind farm BARD Offshore 1 is a trailblazer for offshore wind power in Germany. The fact that it was Germany's most productive offshore wind farm in 2017 highlights the technological and economic potential of this pioneering project.”
The power generated in 2017 was equivalent to the annual consumption of 430,000 average households (3,500 kWh) in Germany. This corresponds to the energy demand of all households in a major city similar to the size of Frankfurt.
Jean Huby, Technical Managing Director of Ocean Breeze Energy, added: "This positive result demonstrates the quality of the Ocean Breeze Energy team and of our strategic partners. Great team work and outstanding wind resources have made it possible to reach this record production level – a very positive signal for the whole offshore wind industry.”
With its 80 turbines, the facility has fed more than 5 terawatt hours (5.1 TWh) into the grid since construction began. It is the first offshore wind farm in Germany to exceed this mark.
With 195 gigawatt hours, October 2017 was the second most productive month since BARD Offshore 1 was commissioned. Only the exceptionally windy month of December 2015 resulted in higher output.
About BARD Offshore 1
BARD Offshore 1 is the first commercial offshore wind farm in Germany. 80 wind energy generators of the 5 megawatt class reach a nominal capacity of 400 megawatt – this equals the energy consumption of more than 400,000 households. The offshore wind farm is located approximately 100 km north of the isle of Borkum in the German North Sea and comprises an area of approximately 59 square kilometres. Ocean Breeze Energy GmbH & Co. KG, owner and operator of the windfarm, BARD Offshore 1, is 100% indirectly held by HypoVereinsbank.
